Tweedledum and Tweedledee
Noblesse oblige is sometimes a little harder to keep in mind…
-Chronicals of a Gentleman’s Gentleman
No, I have no further news on a suitable vehicle, ‘Belle, although I shall endeavour to bear in mind your sage advice that pink is not the only acceptable colour. If I may set that news aside for the moment, I shall tell you of another young one I met today, and the way in which my attempt to, as they say, ‘teach my grandmother to suck eggs’ was received with every sign of courtesy…
I saw the newest child again today. She is not close family, alas. I wish she were. I would gladly be her godfather. I suspect her immediate family would object to the idea, however…
…and so another child has joined the family amid blood and pain, although I do not know yet from which branch of the tree she dangles. She looked so lost and scared, ‘Belle. They are so young, all of them, children forced to grow up too soon, and such a burden rests upon their shoulders. The greatest of my duties is so little, next to the tasks they must accomplish, and the greatest of my sacrifices insignificant next to theirs. Anything I can do to lighten their load is worthwhile. I must keep reminding myself of this. It helps me to sleep of a night, after a long and troubled day…
Sir,
I trust you will excuse the late hour of my return. I spent a little time this luncheon opening acquaintance with those of less fortunate Tribes. I have found such people to be an invaluable source of information if their trust can be gained…
Dear ‘Belle,
It would seem young Master Cedric has found himself a new set of companions. He has not, however, managed to place himself in charge of the undertaking. He has put a good face on it, but I do wonder how deep his true feelings on the matter lie…
Dear ‘Belle,
The Family at home may yet be concerned over the scarcity of their numbers; I may not recount any exact conversations, of course, but I could hardly remain unaware of the situation. Here, however, it would seem our relatives- both close and distant- are flourishing. Only today I was most entertained to meet three of the younger additions to our number…
To The Right Honble. The Earl of Tottenham
Tuesday 6th March 2007
My Lord,
I trust this finds you and the rest of family in good health. I hope the unseasonable weather does not continue too much longer there, and particularly that it will not affect the pheasants. The snow here is now all but gone, although it remains very wet, and I hear that the deer are doing well.
It will please you to learn that there is little to report, no news being good news in this regard. Master Cedric’s behaviour has been exemplary, so far as I have been able to observe, with a commendable application to his duties. I hope I am not overstepping my position to tentatively suggest that he is shouldering the responsibilities he has been trained to. I must confess, however, that I have so far failed to carry out your orders to address his dress sense, although I remain hopeful that matters may improve with time…
Dear Muggsy,
Fancy hearing from you at last! You cunning old badger you. Australia of all places? I’d have thought you’d have had enough of bugs after that cockup with the Sarge and the leg wax.
I ‘m back to ‘that butlering stuff’ again, in America of all places. I know you’ll ask, no, it is nowhere near Disneyland. I also know you’ll ask, yes, you can just walk into a gun shop and buy almost anything except a fully automatic. It’s all a matter of finding the right gun shop, which comes down to knowing how to look. The Goose has not lost his touch.
I was glad you wrote, because I know you’re the man with the mainstream market contacts. What can you tell me about housing prices in St. Claire, Washington State? I’ve been given the wink about a house here…
